Preview: Remnant Takes 4X Strategy to a New Level

Within the last few days, I was introduced to a new 4X title by the name of Remnant. To be honest, I’ve never really found the genre to be all that compelling, as the depth and learning curve for many of the games is often too much for me to get into. I’ve always loved watching others play as epic wars and conquests unfold, and remained blissfully ignorant of exactly what was going on under the hood, so to speak. With the recent introduction to Remnant, I have found a 4X that is not only extremely compelling to me, but also features a great amount of depth that will please veterans of the genre.

Simply described as a “real-time 4X space strategy game”, Remnant puts you in control of the ruler of a faction that is looking to make a name for itself. As the person in charge, you must oversee various operations and ensure the prosperity of your people through resource acquisition, domination and conquering, and also by assembling a well-balanced fleet.

Remnant features a full 3D battle system, which takes place in an open space without grids or tiles. This …read more

Nvidia GTX 980 Ti Video Card Review

For the last few weeks, the internet’s been abuzz about AMD’s upcoming flagship GPU—a single-GPU card built to take on Nvidia’s Titan X, but at a presumably lower price. With today’s launch of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti, Nvidia’s clearly making a preemptive strike against AMD, as you get a card just as fast as the Titan X…but for $650.

If that weren’t enough to grab attention, Nvidia’s also throwing in a copy of Batman: Arkham Knight with each 980 Ti, as well as reducing the price of last September’s GTX 980 to $500. It’s safe to say the gloves are off. (Holy moly are they off.) And benefiting from this brutal slugfest are all PC gamers who’ve been waiting to upgrade.

The Essentials – Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time

The Essentials is Game Informer’s weekly recurring feature that takes a look at the most important games the industry has to offer. These games aren’t just a ton of fun: Their quality, innovation, and industry influence make them must-play experiences for anyone who wants a greater appreciation of our interactive medium.

This weekend we’re taking a look at Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Technically the fourth game in the Prince of Persia franchise, Sand of Time marked a reboot for the series with a new story, a new Prince, and new groundbreaking mechanics that are now considered common in many modern games.

Release Year: 2003
Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Released For: PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, PC

Released in 2003, Sands of Time was helmed by Patrice Désilets (who would later go on to create Assassin’s Creed) and Prince of Persia’s original creator, Jordan Mechner. The game eschewed typical platformer mechanics despite living in the genre. Players still had to navigate platforms and obstacles, but the way you approached it was unlike anything before it.

Players ran along walls, climbed like a parkour expert, and swung and flipped from location to location. Rather than being reliant on the precision of your jumps, making …read more

More ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 4’ Teasers – Nightmare Foxy’s Coming for you

The nightmare continues as Scott Cawthon posted another scary piece of art from the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s 4, the fourth installment of the incredibly-popular Five Nights at Freddy’s [$2.99] series. The new teaser image reveals the Nightmare version of Foxy, one of the series’ most popular animatronics. If you haven’t been following our coverage of FNAF 4, so far we’ve had the Nightmare versions of Freddy, Bonnie, and Chica (and also the cupcake desk ornament, which introduces all kinds of new nightmarish gameplay possibilities).

While reddit was speculating that Foxy would have about ten rows of teeth, since the animatronics in these teasers have many more rows of teeth than their earlier versions, Foxy disappointed as he has even less teeth than Nightmare Chica. As with the other teaser images, Foxy asks “Or Me?”, a reference to the “Bite of ’87” events that have been so central to the series’ mythos. Of course, Scott Cawthon might also be teasing a re-imagining of those events and a break from all that we know about the game’s story. People are speculating that Golden Freddie will be the next animatronic to be revealed, but who knows what …read more

Super Replay – Conker’s Bad Fur Day Episode 9

Conker’s Bad Fur Day tells the story of a foul-mouthed squirrel journeying across farms, poop mountains, and into space to earn money and save the love of his life. You voted for Conker’s Bad Fur Day to be our next Super Replay a few months ago, and we couldn’t be happier to dive back into this Nintendo 64 classic! We anticipate this will be one of the longest Super Replays yet, so grab a tasty beverage, sit back, relax, and prepare for the journey of a lifetime with Ben Reeves, Tim Turi, and me.

As acclaimed as this game is, it almost didn’t happen. Long before Conker was a drunkard, he was a happy-go-lucky red squirrel who was designed to appeal to kids, in a game called Conker’s Quest. The press didn’t like what they saw of Conker’s Quest, saying it was uninspired in design. Rare went back to the drawing board, renaming the game Twelve Tales: Conker 64. That vision too came under scrutiny, and Rare scrapped everything “kiddie” or “cute,” and opted to make a dark game for a mature audience. The switch worked, and launched Conker to the same heights as Rare’s other hits, Banjo-Kazooie, GoldenEye 007, and …read more
